private tours of Scotland

The itinerary was fantastic, and what we most appreciated is Iain would offer suggestions to alter it based on what he quickly learned would be of most interest to us. He always offered the option, of course, to stick to the original itinerary if desired.

Iain didn’t provide a tour, he enabled an experience of a lifetime –one in which we will never forget, and am looking forward to continuing in the future. We also felt like we gained a friend. We felt sad the following week, waking up and asking “where are we going to go with Iain today?” But, all good things must end, but the story can be continued….
Ross and DeAnn West, Arizona, October 2015

There are not enough words to describe the quality of Iain’s knowledge and background. His personality is the key to why I would go back again and again to him. He is funny, easy to be with, beyond knowledgeable and able to sense what his clients want. He is so well connected that he can set up individualized tours that give his clients exactly the experience they are looking for. Terry and Larry Diebold, Maryland, July 2015
Private Tour Scotland

Iain was a phenomenal tour guide! Sweet, kind, funny, charming and extremely benevolent with his knowledge and his heart.
I toured with my aunt, just the 2 of us, and we had such an amazing time with Iain. He told wonderful stories, knew all kinds of history of everywhere we went and tons of other little bits and tips that really made the experience special. We were looking at areas our ancestors came from and just enjoying the local scenery, it was lovely! We could not think of a better way to spend a day travelling in Scotland! If you are looking for a private tour guide, look no further, because this is the company to book with. I guarantee you will not be disappointed! Worth every penney and more, and if/when we return to Scotland I will make sure to book another day with Iain!
Rebecca Lee Robinson and Carol Rose Hollander, Kansas, January 2015

My parents and I just returned from a trip to Scotland. The highlight of the trip was the time we spent with Iain Stewart. Iain's background in Scottish history and folklore added great value to the sites we visited and to our personal knowledge. His ability to adjust to the interest of three different people was impressive and the care he took with my parents (who are in their 80s) was touching. I highly recommend his services!
Sarah Page, Boston MA, November 2014

Iain Stewart is a very special person and a very special guide. He is knowledgeable, witty, obliging and circumspect and was with us for two days. On one day we embarked on a family genealogy "hunt" and he was more than obliging in taking us to out of the way places. He became so interested that he became part of the search! On the other day, we toured Edinburgh, Stirling Castle and the Highlands. Iain's knowledge of Scottish and English history is indeed formidable and he imparts it with ease and interest. You will definitely enjoy your time with Iain!
Dick and Jane Page, Boston, November 2014

My husband and I planned on visiting Scotland but not with 40 other people trying to hear what was being said about something we couldn't get close to. Imagine -- it's just your small group traveling in comfort, but you're not driving -- from the right side of the car on the left side of the road. Think of seeing things you didn't know about because you didn't have local knowledge or know to book in advance. All of that can be easily taken care of if you travel with Iain Stewart of Serenity Scotland. We spent 9 days in August with Iain, traveling from Edinburgh to Aberdeen, to the Orkney Islands, back thru the Highlands, around the Isle of Skye and again to Edinburgh. We traveled nearly 1000 miles by car and used 4 Car Ferries (the one from Aberdeen to Kirkwall, Orkney Island was 5 hours long). All we did was tell him where our interest lay, what was important to us and how long we could travel. He made suggestions, did our bookings and gave us lessons in Geography, History and Folk Lore all rolled into a Fabulous Vacation . AND HE WAS FUN to be with! Thank you Iain and "SLAINTE"
Toni and Larry Shaw, Connecticut, October 2014

Touring with Allan was like coming to Scotland and traveling with one of your friends around the countryside while he showed you the sites. The itinerary was planned with our interests in mind by Iain and all the advice and counsel prior to the trip was accurate and our dealings highly professional. Allan was highly knowledgeable, flexible and personable. His extensive experience gained during personal travel through Scotland over the years, brought a unique edge to how he presented information about each area we visited. Couldn't really ask for more from a trip. Great folks to work with. Would love to do it again.
Scott Paly and Family, August 2014

We felt safe travelling with Allan. My daughter and niece enjoyed talking to him whenever they were not sleeping! hahaha. Allan was very knowledgeable giving us bite size info. He made sure we were booked into our Bed and Breakfast before he left us at the end of the tour. We enjoyed Scotland very much and if we were to come back again I will still take Serenity Scotland Tours. :)
Goke Achary, Singapore, July 2014

We had the best vacation with Serenity Scotland. From the very first day and even before (during the planning of our trip) Ian made it so personalized. We mentioned to him that although one of us is very interested in Scotch distilleries, another would rather see the nature and architecture. He made sure that both of us had the best experience. Every day was filled with something new and exciting! We didn't have to worry about anything. Iain has a natural feeling of what people would like, so all his recommendations were fantastic. And his knowledge of Scotland is so great and he presents it so interesting! The only sad part about the trip was to say Good bye. So we hope to go back and see another part of Scotland and may be bring our friends with us and of course Iain will be the one we'll call. No matter who you are and what is your interest, if you want to have the best vacation in Scotland get in touch with Iain at Serenity Scotland.
William and Victoria Burke, Louisiana, July 2014

Our second tour with Iain Stewart of Serenity Scotland was even better than our first tour (last year), as he tailored the experience to our quirks and preferences. We felt part of a hidden Scotland, with the off the beaten track gems made available just for us. And as always, Iain's kindness, humor, joy and professionalism provided a background of total ease and comfort. We will be back again.
Jen, Paul and Zadie Knapp, Colorado, June 2014

We had a amazing vacation with Serenity tours. Ian's knowledge of Scottish history and folklore was amazing and he made Scotland come alive so that you felt you were right there living all of Scotland's history. The scenery was out of this world. The Highlands, Isle of Skye and the Orkney Islands were our favorites. Ian made sure every day was filled with excitement but just enough relaxation to make this one of the best vacations we have ever taken. We highly recommend Serenity tours and plan to have a article published in our local paper travel section. We have already recommended Serenity tours to our friends. We hope to travel back to Scotland again and bring more family and we definitely will call Iain at Serenity tours.
The Newtons, May 2014

Although he was already booked for the dates we were to be in Scotland, Iain went out of his way to arrange for his brother Allan to guide us, develop our itinerary, and make necessary reservations, etc. Allan was our actual guide and we could not have been happier. Besides being a very nice and interesting person, he was very knowledgeable about the places we visited (distilleries, castles, bridges, historical sites) and made some on the spot changes in the itinerary to match our interests (including a visit to the opening round of the Highland Games). Allan has a comfortable new VW van that easily accommodated the five of us and our bags (technically, I think it holds 7 passengers plus the driver). He is a very good and safe driver. I am very happy to recommend Serenity Scotland.
Peter and Nancy Sikora, Oregon, May 2014

Dear Iain, sorry I did not respond right away, but things were busy after we were away for a while. In my opinion, and in the opinion of my cohorts , the tour was an overwhelming success. We really had a good time, Jock is a great guy and like you said a very good entertainer, the only wish I guess that the day we left for Edinburgh [after the tour] had been better planned, but it was not bad anyway. We would definitely recommend your company and we hope for another whisky tour in near future. Best regards and cheers.
Dr Vadim Leyenson and Whisky Group, Chicago, March 2014

Dear Iain : We had a most wonderful time in Scotland and I am sure the memories will stay for a long time. Thank you for all the wonderland folklores and history lessons. I think the kids remember some of them. I tried to do the questionaire online but somehow was unable to access it without printing it out. I will tell you that most of the items will score 9 or 10, some 11. Our only complaint was the hotel in Skye which was a three storey walkup with very tiny rooms and we had to lug the luggage up three floors, otherwise, the others were wonderful. I understand that the choices were limited due to the winter season. We would definitely return and look for you. I will pass your info to my friends who want to visit Scotland. Happy Holidays! Mun San, Sin Yew, Shen and Kiat ), Singapore, November 2013,

Quality of the Information Giving / Guiding: 10+. Iain could not do better! If I could change one thing it would be my own preparation. I was woefully underprepared to take full advantage of Iain’s vast knowledge and intellect. My reading list is now quite long. LOVED the stories Iain told - especially the folktales (I could have used more - but he can’t be expected to be telling stories all day long), and the descriptions of battles and centuries-long grudges, and the rising of the Jacobites and the Battle of Culloden! Loved that he could read to me poetry in Gaelic! Iain is very entertaining and witty. He saw to every detail - it was great to have someone who could take ALL the stress out of travelling.
Most Outstanding Place / Event: Cannot choose just one place/event. The experiences were all so different. I enjoyed some of the more organic moments, accepting drinks from strange men at The Star Hotel, for instance... I also liked the graveyard and church ruins in Rathan - it had a beauty that is difficult to describe. I loved the castle ruins also- especially Urquhart and Eilean Donon. Breathtaking! I want to move to one of those little fishing villages by the sea where the air smells fresh and all you can hear is silence. I could also go on about the beauty of the scenery in Scotland. Amazing!

Overall Communication/People Skills: [10] [Iain] you are an excellent communicator and displayed a keen sense and understanding of our needs; you possess a unique ability to convey historical data in a very concise and interesting way; you never get lost in the details and you make historical info come alive and relate to what we were actually seeing.
Overall Satisfaction/Tour: [10] you personally did an excellent job. I wish you could clone yourself so that more travelers in Scotland could experience the country in such a joyful and interesting way as we did. As we told you, our trip to Scotland far exceeded our expectations mainly due to selecting you as our guide and seeing first hand the raw and untamed beauty of western Scotland, the scenic Highlands and Lochs, historical cities like Edinburgh, St. Andrews and Glasgow and last but not least the Glamis area which has been the home to a small but important part of the OGILVY clan. Lastly, we would HIGHLY recommend you as a tour guide for any trip to Scotland…you’re simply the BEST of the BEST.
Jan and Ray Oneidas, Florida, September 2013

Private Tour Scotland SkyeHats Off to You for an excellent Scotland tour. We found our roots in Lochinver Dallachuish and Crimond and that was the intent of our trip to Scotland. You provided the historic and cultural background that made this trip so memorable and meaningful. The many castles and historic events from Bonnie Prince Charlie to the McKenzie and McCrea’s clans with your detailed explanations was exceptional. We had a good Ireland tour with CIE but it was pale in comparison to your Serenity Scotland tour. Thanks again and we will promote this tour and hopefully send some of our Scottish friends and family your way.
Art and Phyllis McKenzie, Canada, September 2013

Iain, the tour was excellent and I would not hesitate a second to recommend you to others. If you ever require references, please do not hesitate to give our names.
Keith and Agathe Kennedy, Canada, September 2013

Private Tour Scotland SkyeIain you were a wonderful host and guide, we will talk about you and our tour for years to come. I have told so many people here at home about the excellent three days we spent with you... I have a two year plan with a friend to come back to Scotland and we will be contacting you to be our guide. I was so impressed with you knowledge of so many different things. Your skill to draw Madison out was very well appreciated!

Scotland the Rave!

It has now been a couple of weeks since we returned from a truly memorable trip to Scotland, and the blissful Scottish feeling is still with us. We attribute this to the incredible tour Iain Stewart put together for us. Merely filling out a feedback form did not suffice, so we wanted to share in more detail, for any future clients, the tremendous amount of personal research, effort and energy Iain exerted to show us a Scotland we could never have otherwise experienced. Private Tour Highlands Skye Scotland
I had worked with Iain on our trip for almost a year prior. This was to be the first true vacation for my wife Terry and me in over 15 years. We discovered that her Finley roots originated in Scotland, and Iain brilliantly helped us research her clan back to the Finleys and the Farquharsons. Since we were fortunate enough to have over two weeks to spend exploring Scotland, Iain intertwined our cultural journey like a trip through time. It was like a fine Harris tweed being woven with tales, stories and sites of where the Finleys once trod.

A word about our two weeks together, For never having met prior to our trip, what a blessing to have hit off so well with Iain starting with a walking tour of Edinburgh. For being with new people for this long, he showed remarkable people skills including patience, flexibility and showed up each morning with a sunny and positive disposition, even on the few rainy days

Iain's background in history, ethnology and folklore made for intriguing cultural perspectives, and we had the rare opportunity to see sites of significance that ordinary tours would have passed by. His storytelling held us spellbound, and we could visualize the people and the settings as if we were there - such as the Scottish Age of Enlightenment.

With a mutual love of music, we even had the chance to see a favorite artist/ musician Andy Chung at a local pub in Edinburgh. On a later part of the trip at Arisaig House, the three of us had an opportunity to try our hand at the bagpipes, and play piano and fiddle together. The Dulaig was another magical bed & breakfast we stayed at with wonderful hosts Carol and Gordon whose warm hospitality made us feel like old friends. One morning we woke up to a brilliant sun on the meadow followed by a double rainbow!

The other accommodations he recommended were a palette of diversity giving us a taste of all levels of Scottish living from the stately Balmoral Hotel in Edinburgh, to the grand Gleneagles resort, to quaint Rufflets in St. Andrews, to the idyllic House-Over-By at The Three Chimneys on the Isle of Skye, and last but not least, the pleasingly enigmatic Prestonfield House in Edinburgh whose rooms were described as "Baroque Bordello" - we loved it

Iain's VW was always immaculate and comfortable, with his special touch of leaving some of Terry's heather in place each day (from her family area in Muckle Inverey). We spent many hours in his van, but he was an excellent and skillful driver, especially with the many narrow country roads we took. The hours just melted away with his selection of Scottish music, old and new as well as storytelling from comedian Ivor Cutler.

We were fortunate enough to have great weather on our trip. When it did mist or rain, it was appropriate for feeling the energy of magical areas like the Fairy Glen on the magnificent Isle of Skye. We appreciated Iain's sensitivity and awareness when we needed to slow down or rest. But he was also a great leader especially on more challenging hikes where the views at the end were far worth the exertion.

Of course, being immersed in Scotland's rich culture meant diving into their culinary delights. Again Iain excelled at selecting local spots that exemplified farm to table or fresh seafood to sample. I already miss the Stornoway black pudding, Strathdon blue cheese and Isle of Mull cheddar. One of the most memorable moments was when we pulled into a local town butcher shop to pick up some onion bridies, sausage rolls and Cornish pasties, and had an impromptu picnic with Iain pouring us a generous dram of Glendronach single malt scotch.

Thus when we parted at the Edinburgh airport after this incredible journey, we felt we had made a wonderful friend in Iain, and hope to keep up with him for a very long time. He offers an unique personal approach to seeing this beautiful rugged Scotland. We thought this would be a once in a lifetime trip, but now we hope that we are wrong, and we get to make another journey with Iain again.

I have already mentioned to many people that our personalized tour experiences were wonderful. All five of us are prepared to recommend your company as the opportunity arises. Keep up the great work. Scotland is lucky to have you and we were fortunate to borrow you for six wonderful days.

Private Whisky Tour ScotlandWe truly couldn’t have imagined what a wonderful trip you had planned for us. Our expectations were quite high and you completely exceeded them!! We’d recommend you to anyone and will gladly serve as a reference if you ever need one. All of us just loved the music (both live singing and the pieces that you had on your ipod). And I SO appreciated that you were able to add in some things that you knew we would enjoy as you got to know us better. We were so happy to get to see Stalker Castle and Aberlour Castle on the fly! Thanks so much for making Scotland so special for us. We’ll be back!! Cheers!!

On behalf of our entire family (ranging in age from 8 to 74), we could not be more pleased with our recent trip with Iain. Over the course of five perfect days, our consummate guide introduced us to the wonders of Scotland’s history, geography, landscape, and people. His recommendations - encompassing historical attractions, walks, accommodations, and restaurants - could not have been better. Iain quickly assessed our interests and tailored our trip accordingly; e.g., introducing our daughter to an out-of-the-way fairy glen and finding us the perfect whisky distillery tour. His passion for history, folklore, language, and music enriched our journey at every turn. By the end of the trip he felt like a part of our family! Our adventure in Scotland has been life-changing, which we attribute almost entirely to the quality, kindness, and skill of our guide. We are already planning to return next year, traveling with Iain, of course!

Iain I am not sure where to start given the time lapse except to say Scotland was over the top for us thanks to you and we want to come back. I just wanted to send you a quick note as I want to stay in touch. We are discussing how to come back for a tour with you next year. James Almost and Kate Brown, Canada May 2013

We have returned to our various homes/locations safely. We had an amazing trip and you were a big part of that. We throughly enjoyed our tours with you and Ewen. We just can't thank you enough for throughly enriching our trip. Any return trips to Scotland will, of course, involve you. Thank you so much for everything, Iain.

I would be thrilled to write a testimonial to help with your business. You helped me fulfill my dream a hundred times better than I could have myself.
Robert Adams Jr. Wisconsin April 2013

Absolutely outstanding [information giving / guiding]! Ranging from history to pop trivia and current day politics each topic was covered with the same degree of knowledge and enthusiasm! The folk music and tales provided fantastic additional insight and helped set the tone for places visited. Great idea well executed!
To succeed in talking four days straight while keeping the audience at a 100% interest level (as we were) requires outstanding people skills. You did a great job of sensing our energy level (such as being slightly lower after lunch) and adapting narrative accordingly without compromising content. Great job!
All places of accommodation were of high quality, each with its own unique character. Great mixture with a sense of something new each day.

Private Tour Perthshire Scotland

Recommendations for B & B locations were perfect. Overall, the detailed recommendations made for the various locations we stayed were outstanding. Iain really listened to what our expectations were and was able to point us to perfect choices. The VW van was perfect for our trip. Very comfortable and great for traveling the countryside. We even gave [Iain] credit for creativeness in finding alternate transportation when his primary vehicle was being repaired. Iain was attentive to our comfort level and made adjustments usually before we were aware adjustments were needed. We felt very safe riding as passengers.Private Tour Highlands Scotland The quality of the information was significantly higher then we expected and was one of the greatest values we got from the trip. Iain is a well read and knowledgeable historian. We felt as though we were on a university level field study course. Following our trip we have continued to read about Scottish history and have been impressed with the factual correlation of what Iain shared with us and other writings. One of the most impressive aspects of our trip was how insightful Iain is in being able to read people. He was able to quickly (almost real-time) read our level of interest in various areas, or subjects and make adjustments in the plans to shift and focus on the items that would be most valuable to us and our objectives. This made the trip a very personal and special type of trip for us. Having the opportunity to hear local music was a highlight. Really felt honored to be able to meet friends and see a little of the soul of Scotland. Our trip to Scotland was one of our most enjoyable trips ever. Iain was a key ingredient in making this trip special. We will come back and will insist on having Iain guide us once again to new parts of the land.

From the whole Fraser family… Reed, Grant Karlene and me… THANK YOU for your guidance, attention, information and your company. You did a superb job and that is no exaggeration. This was the trip of a lifetime that exceeded my expectations. Quite honestly I have a hard time defining which part was the best. There were fun moments, picturesque moments, spiritual moments, powerful moments… but the entirety of the trip was one of my best travel experiences ever.
John and Karlene Fraser and Family, Texas, August 2012

Dear Iain, We would like to say again thank you for our wonderful and unforgetful tour in your company. We three enjoyed very deeply the Scottisch visiting, stories, music and the special advises to Edouard. We will also keep marvellous memories about a guide which was always friendly, helpful, heartful, a good driver, showing us the best of Scottland. We already gave your adress to a lady. Take care and hopefull we see you again for an other tour. Best regards.
Karine, Philip and Edouard Brom, Switzerland, July 2012

We enjoyed the tour very much. It was an experience we will not forget.
Andew and Pauline Ng, Vancouver Canada, July 2012

Your recommendations for accommodations and working out the route, made it easy, and another great trip. You regaled us with stories, catered to the girl's odd requests, shared the history of the land with us all, and included attractions that we would all enjoy. We didn't miss anything and were hurried when we needed to be. We never felt concerned about the driving. We loved to learn about all the sites we visited, culture and history of Scotland. The fact that you look up anything you don't know the answer to, shows in your tour. Your wealth of info was likely helped from all the questions you've heard from your other tours. Excellent communication skills. You catered to the young and the seniors and everyone in between, making it interesting for everyone. We had 2 small children, a senior citizen that spoke English as a second language, and Ana and I and everyone got along. You changed the itinerary as needed adjusting to our abilities and requests. Wonderful job! There was a lot of great places, but if we had to pick one, the boat ride up to the castle, the castle itself and the beautiful setting and rich history. (The cozy Tea house was also a lovely stop (as was pottery bunkhouse, etc. It's hard to not list them all…)) We would also need to add that your and Katie's lovely music touched us all very deeply! We will not forget the special night you created for us. We really enjoyed the farm fresh and organic places you took us as well as the seafood restaurant. It was outstanding.

Private FamilyTour Scotland

Iain spent months helping me with our itinerary and a venue for a commemorative family event. I can’t think of a thing he could have done better. His suggestions were all great and I could not have planned this trip without his expertise and knowledge of locations. Iain was friendly and accommodating. He had to pick up members of our party at two different locations, which he did with no problem at all. Everyone was made comfortable immediately. Iain was extremely courteous and kind. There were eight in our party, and he made a point of engaging everyone’s interests and ideas. We were right on schedule throughout the trip without feeling rushed. We never felt there was any issue about safety. Iain is a great driver who knows where he’s going at all times. Iain is completely knowledgeable about Scottish history. He answered all our questions. Iain was kind, funny, entertaining, articulate, and knowledgeable. He communicated wonderfully with everyone in our party. During the planning of our trip, Iain made suggestions for accommodations, some of which we were able to book. They were all great – well located and lovely B & Bs that we all enjoyed. Iain and I planned the itinerary together over the course of a few months. He was most willing to alter it as it became necessary. In particular, he went out of his way to find a location for our family commemorative ceremony near Oban and even went so far as to play the fiddle for the ceremony. It was moving and memorable. There were so many highlights of our trip, but the memorial ceremony for our mother/grandmother was a highlight. The location at Arduaine Gardens, the music (Iain’s fiddle), and the welcome we received there will never be forgotten. There was no event or place that didn’t stand out for us. Excellent value. We were 100% satisfied with our tour. Christine Berkhout, Welland, Ontario, Canada, May 2012

Again your day tour added what I was hoping to get on this trip – a view of the country outside a city environment. I would actually consider another trip to Scotland to spend more time exploring more of the country but I have to admit, this trip exceeded my expectations. Thanks again
Chris Cardosi, Rhode Island, May 2012

Of course, we would recommend Serenity Scotland, and we do! We enjoyed our time with you, and you helped make our trip very special. We look forward to seeing our friend again. You are very much like family to us now, Iain. We had a wonderful time! Thanks again, Iain.
Dr Lisa Miller, Mark Reynolds and Louise Reynolds, Oklahoma, May 2012 (second trip)

Iain, Upon our arrival and our two days in Edinburgh (where you guided us through from afar), we were luxuriating and already complimenting you before we even met in the “Serenity Scotland” (more on that later) experience that you had designed to make our dreams come true, and we immediately knew we had chosen the best. Your Sunday morning on-time arrival to start our magic carpet ride in your spotless, comfortable and perfect-for-our- adventure VW van was only topped by our instantly established friendship. Each of our six days together included five star accommodations, superb food, beautiful scenery, historical references, distillery tours and wee drams, recitals of skirmishes, delicious Scottish fare, hangings, cashmere, battles, majestic snow capped mountains, steam train, bloodshed, breath taking lochs, human sacrifices, whisky bagging, wars, gorgeous waterfalls, clan uprisings, tannery & dying, murder, shortbread (how dare they, but they did, or actually didn’t), death, Jacobite rebellions, beloved Scottish tales, betrayal, Harris Tweed, genocide, the Gaelic peoples’ history and language, love of country, the sea and countless others which room does not allow us to list and always ending with a scrumptious and well prepared meal of local seafood, meat or fowl, allowing us just enough time to reflect on the day’s events over yet another wee dram and drift off into quiet slumber. Your “Serenity Scotland” moniker may be true today but historically, quite the oxymoron. My most outstanding place/event should not be limited to the Balvenie tour and the wee dram of their double wood whisky because it would leave out all of the above, along with the Grain Store, The Zoo, Skye, Poit Dhubh), Glengoyne Teapot Dram whisky (what a find) and you. Suggestions: drop that particular Apex Waterloo Place Hotel and Spa which didn’t even live up to its supposed four star rating except for location and solitude, boycott Walker’s shortbread (Dean’s is better tasting anyway), somehow break up the drive to Skye (I know we had to get there, but maybe starting a bit earlier and having a longer lunch or better yet, adding a night), and with Google Earth or something provide some individual maps of the areas that you told us about which would have increased our understanding, feeling and enjoyment of what the Scots’ had to go through to accomplish what they did. I will have to leave recommendations of you and Serenity Scotland to Maureen because if it were up to me I would not be able to stop the accolades. I am sorry that I only have one more knee to replace because I don’t know how we are going top you and your tour. Thank you and kindest personal regards
Henry (Hank) and Maureen NIkora, Connecticut, May 2012

Iain, I have been meaning to send you a quick note since I returned home a week ago and your email has spurred me into action. Thank you so much for the tour and thank Allan again for us. He has a great personality for dealing with our group and he has a great deal of patience as well. We enjoyed our time with him immensely and I think Aunt Jean even enjoyed herself. I know my dad and brother thoroughly loved their time on Mull. I had arranged a driver while we were in Ireland as well and the difference in the two experiences was vast. The driver in Ireland was also very good, but the personal touch that I felt we got with Allan and with dealing with you was wonderful. I can’t say enough good things about our experience with Serenity Scotland. We have used a number of small tour companies over the years and you operate a very good one. I will try to complete the form and send it back to you over the next few days. Thank you again and thank Allan again for everything
Paula Kjosness, Alberta, May 2012

We liked the choice of the route taken, in that way we could see a bit of the country, especially the highland part. We liked particularly the company of our guides Jock and Iain, for the way they treated us and entertained us with a lot of information about virtually anything, not to forget their lovely jokes and songs. Thank you guy’s for everything.

Dear Iain, Good Morning, Hope all is well at your end, I am writing to thank you for the amazing services offered to Mr Mc Cook and his family. I have got a great feedback from them and they were very Happy with the way the itinerary was planned. Your services have been outstanding and I would be more than willing to guide all my clients travelling in that region to you. Mr McCook has sent me an email and he wants to thank us for the efforts put into his family history, but its actually your work so I thought I would pass on the message and commend for the really amazing work. Looking forward to working with you again! Many Thanks, Best Regards

You have enriched us with knowledge about history and culture of Scotland. You have given us a lot of musical and emotional experiences. The day tour was always more than planned. Your driving was always safe. You were always very polite and friendly. We shall never forget you. We shall always recommend you. Joseph and Dalia Shalom, Tel Aviv, August 2011

 Private Tour Guide Scotland

We have done nothing but talk about our time together with you since we got back. It truly was the trip of lifetime! We will have fond memories for the rest of our lives, and will share those with our family. It was so nice to see a friendly face upon arrival. You were unfailingly courteous and always on time, as well as cognizant of scheduling through the day. We couldn’t ask for a more knowledgeable tour guide. I enjoyed your stories very much. It was just perfect for three people. Mary has invited all of our cousins to her house to share in the photos and the ancestry tracing. There will be nine of us. Several from out of town. You have helped more than just three Scots!
Sally Daniel, Michigan June 2011

[We] definitely got our money’s worth. Excellent recommendations for all meals. Visited more places for less money than expected. Iain went above and beyond in trying to help us find the grave site of my great-great-grandmother. He was very knowledgeable about where to find this information. Far above original expectations.
Charlie and Mary Fiorina, Michigan June 2011

You replied swiftly and efficiently [to our booking]. Very charming [on arrival]. We were able to see a lot and have dinner at a reasonable hour. Your choices in places to eat were wonderful, it was great to have someone else choose our restaurant and they be perfect choices. Very mindful of our safety, also of road conditions at all times. Iain is extremely versed in history of the area; folklore; interesting stories of the times. Very fascinating. Communication skills [were] excellent, Very clear speaking and great sense of humor. We were very comfortable at all times; we were able to pack all of our luggage into the back of the van and still more than enough room for comfortable seating. You were very conscientious of the cleanliness of the vehicle, with mats for mud and cleaned up every morning. I talked to the boys on their opinions about the trip/tour. Everyone felt you did a terrific job especially based on my requests, so what I’m about to write is by no means a reflection on [you]. Based on the questions you asked me prior to booking I had said we’ve seen lots of castles and churches and that I’d like to go up to the Isle of Skye. But after driving almost continually for three days I would make changes to my itinerary. With your history and folklore knowledge I believe stopping at the castles/ruins would have been every interesting. Also, we drove through many quaint towns that I wished we had more time to stop and see. As for the beauty of the driving experience this is unsurpassed and you did a great job showing us all you did in a short period of time. Knowing this now, I think I’d travel less and enjoy seeing more. Maybe letting the next folks know that this is a lot of driving maybe three days is not enough to go so far unless driving is all they want to do. I hope this is of some help to you, remember this is not any criticism to you personally just our idea of how we would have done it differently knowing what we know now and knowing you and what you could have offered us. Thanks for a super experience and delightful company.

Your response to my emails was handled very well. Your greeting and smile were wonderful. You were always very polite and courteous. Your driving was spot on and we always felt safe with you. It is amazing how much you know and the quirky facts, too! The places we visited were fantastic. Thank you for your patience as mom and I were shopping. Iain, you were absolutely a joy to see Scotland with. Your knowledge and love for Scotland truly showed when you were guiding me and mom. You are excellent at what you do and I have highly recommended you to many people!

Scotland Private TourSince we have been back, the kids, as well as Jake and I, keep remembering different parts of the trip. I would say out of all the trips we have taken this one has made the deepest impression. Also, it was one of the most fun. I am hoping that we can come back someday and that you will be available to guide us again. Thank you for a lovely vacation.

The entire trip was outstanding and the information provided made it even more interesting to be there. Thank you Iain for a fantastic tour. We can not stop talking about it. Scottish Borders Private Tour

Iain was an ideal guide for our tour of Scotland. He was so warm and affable, truly an easygoing travel companion who accommodated our every request. Not only did he recommend the nicest places to stay with the best meals (incredible, fresh seafood which we never even thought was such a large part of the Scottish menu), but also, took us to the best sights and enchanted, wild landscapes to take in. Having an advanced degree in Scottish history and folklore, he was a treasure trove of information on anything we had questions about. He also kept the children's interest with tales of witches, ghosts, the Five Sisters, and the fierce battles of William Wallace, Robert the Bruce, and Bonnie Prince Charlie. We can't wait to go back and see our new Scottish friend again!
Kathleen Ballew and David Hynds, November 2010

It was a lovely trip. Scotland is a beautiful place. It was a pleasure travelling with you Iain. Thank you for your information and excellent guiding skills
Donna, November 2010

We thoroughly enjoyed the day we spent with you, and the stories you told about history, politics and place-name origins informed the rest of our stay in Scotland. You were empathetic and well prepared. In retrospect, I wish we'd booked more time with you!

Iain- this truly was the BEST vacation EVER!!! I cannot wait to come back to Scotland and tour Ireland as well.......don't worry we won't be doing it until 2012 so that gives you a little time to prepare yourself!!!! As we reflect back on our pictures and video it is exciting but also sad that it has come and gone so quickly........but we have GREAT memories of our time together. Again, thanks for everything and we hope you are well. We will be in touch!

Skye Tour Feedback

I have just had a glass of wine with Jim and Marie. I was not surprised at all how thrilled they were with the few days they spent with you. They were very, very pleased with everything, accommodation, guide, vehicle.. everything exceed their expectations. I am so happy I was able to book them with you.... Jim specifically made a point of saying he was certain you took them to places the tour buses would drive right by. They had a wonderful month away and every aspect of their holiday was wonderful but the time with Serenity tours was a highlight. Thanks, I look forward to working with you again.
Heather Wilkinson, Uniglobe Instant June 2010

Thank you for sharing your knowledge of Scotland with us and giving us a fabulous tour of your beautiful country. You far exceeded our expectations. We feel we have made a friend and hope that we can keep in touch and meet again someday.

Andrea had recommended Serenity Tours run by Iain Stewart ( We booked a tour through the highlands with them and it was excellent. Great driver and guide, his knowledge combined with his wonderful personality made for a very informative and fun tour. We ended up singing in Gaelic on the Isle of Skye!

Private Tour Ireland

We have filled out the evaluation but it doesn’t cover all the fun we had. How do you explain the dozens of versions of seafood chowder each one as different but as tasty as the others? The haunting fog and misty rain around the ring fort. Think how cold it was even with peat fires and woolen robes. No wonder there are so many mystical stories. The atmosphere is perfect. The cliffs on the western side are spectacular so wild and rugged. The ice age glaciers did a good job of scouring the country and not leaving much to exist on. It certainly brought home the human tragedy of the famines and removals.... I especially enjoyed the Heritage Center and the personalized tour of a peat bog and cottage along with the chickens as guides. Then there was the stray fiddler we found in the parking lot somewhere in Northern Ireland. The seas have such an impact on Ireland that I am really glad we opted for the coast route. We are so far from the ocean and I miss the atmosphere. Once again you have given us many happy memories to mull over and relate to life. Thank you.

I shall always remember this trip. We could not have done this on our own, by any means. You were WONDERFUL, to put up with five women for over a week...Every stop was unique and your insight for your country history marvelous.

We are home and settling back into the real world after our vacation and I just wanted to thank you again for showing us such a wonderful time in Scotland. We all agree that we couldn't have chosen a more perfect guide! We enjoyed our tour and would like to recommend you to any of my patients who might be going to Scotland.

I have had many enquiries about my trip to Scotland and there isn't really a story to be told that doesn't include your presence, your storytelling, your sense of humour, your music or your kindness. You were an invaluable part of our group. I think the time frame for out trip was just the right number of days, leaving us with a desire to return.

It's been sometime since we returned from Scotland, and I've been remiss in not thanking you before now for all you did to make our trip there so wonderful. You truly are the premier tour guide in all of Scotland! Thanks so much for taking Rachel and I under your wing for our first four days. Traveling with you was so much fun, and you were a font of useful interesting information. Looking at our pictures taken on the beach at Morar and all the other places we visited brought back all the great memories we made over there. I sincerely appreciate all the help you gave me in planning the trip and guiding us around your beautiful country.

Further to our magical experience discovering the secrets of Scotland, I would like to thank you for being a great guide, with deep knowledge of the history of every rock in Scotland and the talent to transfer it with the most unique and pleasant approach
- Margarita Vlami, Greece, February 2009

It was such a pleasure having you as our tour guide on the Serenity Scotland tour that I took with my mother and sisters. Scotland is such a beautiful country and I think we are all in agreement that we would like to come back soon for another visit (or visits)! We enjoyed ourselves immensely and had so much fun - I haven't laughed so much for a long time and it was fun having you relate some of the Scottish folklore and history of the different places we visited, and leading us in some of the Scottish songs, the ones that we were familiar with and teaching us new songs. The next time, we will be prepared to teach you a few more good old Canadian songs. I am amazed that we were able to see as much as we did in such a short time... We really appreciated Iain's extra effort in finding out the area of the birthplace of our Great Grandfather in Glasgow as well as taking us to the Abercrombie Cemetery where our Great Great Grandmother may have been laid to rest... This will surely be a trip that we will all remember and will pass along our experiences and anecdotes to our children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren... !
The Pollard Family, Canada, October 2008

My wife and I did a four-day version of the whisky tour and I would say that this is without doubt one of the best experiences we had in travel. We took a route and accommodation recommended by Serenity, all being excellent value. Our guide throughout the tour was the owner of the agency, Iain, who had a deep knowledge on Scotland's history, culture and geography, which was way beyond the standards of the tourist industry. One cannot think of a better way to see Scotland and get understanding of its rich tradition.
Teodor and Anna, Bulgaria, September 2008

Our holiday in Scotland was wonderful and the tour with you was without any doubt the best part of it. When we were back in Edinburgh we enjoyed it but it was not so exciting and relaxing as with you. The kids kept saying "we miss Iain" and the "mothers" were not saying it aloud but it was what we were thinking....
Cinzia, Italia, July 2008

I just wanted to thank you for the wonderful tour of Scotland. Your knowledge of history and folklore made our trip extra special. Your kindness, thoughtfulness and good naturedness ensured that our trip was one of a lifetime........unless we come back for more! I have already sung your praises to several friends and would recommend your tours to anyone heading to Scotland. You're the best!
Gail McGee, Canada, July 2008

Well, it's been over a week since we've all ventured back home. We're all feeling a "wee bit" in the dumps! What a let down after our incredible adventure. I want to take a few minutes to tell you how much fun we had. Thank you for all your patience, your amazing knowledge, and always going above and beyond the call of duty. You are absolutely the perfect person we were looking for, when we decided to "splurge" and hire a private guide. I know I can take the liberty and speak for us all, that was the best decision we made in planning our trip to Scotland! I can't thank you enough for providing us with one of the most (if not the most) memorable trips I've ever had. Not only did we have a blast, but learned so much about your beautiful country. You're the best!

Handling of Booking (out of 10 / 10 ): I appreciate the way the booking is handled, the kind of information provided has give a good picture and helped us in prior preparations for travel. Welcome upon arrival (out of 10 / 10 ) : He was at the meeting point at the exact time specified to us and seen that we do not face any trouble in the new place in contacting him, what more do a stranger in new place expects? Courtesy of Driver/ Guide (out of 10 / 10 ) : Excellent! He has been a perfect representative of his country. Timekeeping of Driver/ Guide (out of 10 / 10 ): I doubt if we secure 5/10, if the same question on us is asked to Iain. But I rate it as 10/10 for him. Driving / Safety Aspect of Driver/ Guide (out of 10 /10): Excellent, never faced any sort of inconvenience. Quality of the Information Giving / Guiding(out of 10/10) : Superb! A one word feedback for this. Overall Communication Skills/ People Skills of Driver/ Guide (out of 10 / 10) : I never tested his grammar skills but if asked on the way he deals with people, communicate & explain things I cannot refrain from giving 10 out of 10. Cleanliness of Vehicle (out of 10 / 10 ): Very clean! Comfort of Vehicle (out of 10 / 10): Very good! Overall Accommodationif applicable (out of 10 / ): It was our own arrangement and hence not going to comment on this! Suitability of the Itinerary to your interests / needs (out of 10 / 10) This requires special mentioning, we being strangers to that place never knew what we want to visit to. Credit goes to Iain in planning and organising the tour in such a good way. I simply will recommend anyone saying "know nothing about Scotland, get in touch with Iain, he will take care of everything!".Most Outstanding Place / Event : It varied from one person to other in our group, to name a few: CIA-AIG trekking, Aonach Mor, Loch Ness boat ride... Least Outstanding Place / Event : Very difficult to mention in such a beautiful country, sorry! Value for Money of Tour: (out of 10 / 10 ) I am writing these review comments 1 month after returning from tour but I haven't lost any of the memories and I am sure I can cherish those memories for a very long time. To a new place when you go for a tour if you can relish memories and recollect those fun times for a long time, can I not say the tour is worth for money?

Custom Tour Scotland

Thank you Iain for taking my request on short notice and in the wintertime. Scotland was exactly what I needed to recharge my batteries and the tour locations were exactly what I needed to experience. From the holy wells, to the standing stones and stone circles, the souterraines and wee hill climbing, not to forget Dunsinane and Birnam Hill and the last standing oak of Birnam forest and the ancient Yew tree... the mighty river Tay, Dunkeld, and Weem, very hard to imagine we did all these things in three days... and the list is not complete for all that we did and saw. I look forward to our next tour... more Perthshire and new adventures in Argyll. And, of course, thank you for the craic and friendship
- Carl Pritchett, Texas, January 2008

Thank you for such an entertaining, thorough tour of our roots. You were the perfect guide: charismatic, informative, funny, relaxed. You were so engaged, and so enthusiastic that we learn about our heritage. Also, it was very thoughtful of you to research our family name ahead of time. My mom and I talk about that trip often; it was a wonderful memory for us both. :) Thank you again!
- Cambria Minott, California, December 2007

Quality of the Information Giving / Guiding (out of 10 / 100) That's right; 100. Iain seems to be equal parts historian and folklorist and showman. He used those skills in storytelling that helped make the sites and the landscape come to life. He provided depth and background that helped to dispel myths and to reveal little-known facts. My family is Scottish by descent and the background Iain provided really made our trip very memorable and enjoyable
Kevin McDonald and family, California, August 2007

Overall Satisfaction with the Package: (out of 10 /10) Excellent job with the quick turnaround and multifaceted itinerary; and a great job adjusting on the fly. [You are] very knowledgeable and you were continually researching things to meet our needs. The trip ranks as the top trip we have taken

Piilani, Faye, and Robert, and I have traveled a great deal of the world together. We have done our travel in small groups, and for the most part been well escorted.     But, our time with you folks was an exception, or best said EXCEPTIONAL. I`m turning your feedback form over to Piilani to complete. I say 10s all the way. lets see what she can add to assist in making it even better. Once again thanks again for all you shared with us. Iain, you do a great job. You're very friendly but also professional. Your knowledge is amazing! Also, you're very observant and caring about the comfort and interests of your customers. It makes it easy to go someplace in particular or to say we may not be interested in something you suggest.

Please feel free to give my email address to anyone who needs a personal recommendation. I would be happy to comply. Thanks for the great trip.

Posted on the Rick Steves website: Custom Tours in Scotland: For a custom tour in Scotland I highly recommend Iain Stewart. So many interesting sights such as early Christian crosses and standing stones are not marked by any sign. It really helps to have a true local guide. Beth & Bert Collier, Lusby, MD USA July 2005

Iain, you were awesome! You made history come alive. You made us think. You went the extra mile in many situations. Best of all you made us laugh! You are a renaissance man. with a wide knowledge base and varied interests. Your personality enabled you to relate to each one of us. We will never forget you or Scotland.
