This day tour focuses on the opportunity to explore what can be considered as the strategically most important castle in Scotland, with stunning views, combined with an off-the-beaten-track view of the Highlands (without driving all day!).

Highland Perthshire & Stirling

On this tour:

  • Welcome and pick-up from your Edinburgh lodgings (or from the airport)
  • Travel via Bannockburn (1314 battle site) to Stirling with its old city walls, splendid 17th century buildings such as Cowane’s Hospital and Argyll’s Lodging, its Church of the Holy Rude (where James VI/I was baptised and crowned) and Stirling Castle with views to the Wallace Monument, the Ochil Hills, the Campsie Fells and Flanders Moss
  • Journey from Stirling Crag by Gowan Hill to the road to The Trossachs, drive by the early 19th century model village of Deanston including its mill, now converted into Deanston Distillery
  • View Doune Castle, residence of the Dukes of Albany and castle of dowager queens, now famous as a film location for Monty Python and Diane Gabaldon’s ‘Outlander’
  • Lunch at the local Buttercup Cafe in Doune
  • Journey by Kilmahog to see highland cattle before traversing the shore of Loch Lubnaig to Glen Ogle
  • Enter the highland village of Killin and enjoy The Falls of Dochart from its glacial boulders
  • Travel along Loch Tay (150m at its deepest)
  • Visit the Croft Moraig double stone circle before entering the small highland town of Aberfeldy (close to J.K. Rowling’s country home)
  • Saunter back to Edinburgh
