Uncovering Fife’s Hidden Gems: Kirkcaldy Galleries:
Fife Treasure…
Nestled in the heart of Fife, Kirkcaldy Galleries is a vibrant showcase of Scottish creativity and local heritage. For travellers exploring Scotland’s rich story on a bespoke Serenity Scotland tour, this cultural treasure offers an authentic, off-the-beaten-path connection to the nation’s artistic and industrial past.
The galleries boast a nationally renowned collection, including the largest public assembly of works by celebrated Scottish Colourist Samuel Peploe, alongside atmospheric seascapes by William McTaggart. Beyond the fine art, the museum vividly chronicles Kirkcaldy’s industrial legacy, tracing its transformation into a global centre for linoleum manufacturing, fine pottery and coal mining.
The galleries host visiting exhibitions throughout the year. In 2027, we look forward to experiencing ‘Making Her Mark: A Celebration of Women in Art’. The exhibition explores the role, impact and lasting legacy of women in British art from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day. A Zandvoort Fishergirl by Elizabeth Adela Forbes, pictured above, is among the many paintings featured.
Women have played a vital role in shaping British art, yet their work has often been underrepresented, overlooked or undervalued. This major touring exhibition brings their contributions into focus, celebrating the creativity, influence and achievements of women artists across generations.
Among the collection’s most captivating artefacts are two historic flintlock pistols linked to a dramatic episode in local history: the infamous 1826 Fife duel between mild-mannered businessman David Landale and hot-tempered merchant George Morgan. After Morgan publicly struck Landale with an umbrella on Kirkcaldy High Street during a financial dispute, Landale felt bound by the code of honour to issue a challenge. In the resulting stand-off at Ferryhills, Landale shot and killed Morgan in self-defence. In a remarkable twist, Morgan’s nephew later married Landale’s daughter, and the two combatants now rest barely a pistol shot apart in Kirkcaldy’s Old Kirk graveyard.
