The Food o’ Kings and Queens

Kingdom of Fife Food TourCredit: VisitScotland / Peter Dibdin

Scotland is a treat for foodies and the Kingdom of Fife in particular, with its fine alluvial soils, its devonian uplands, and its rugged coastal seas, offers a veritable bounty of fruit, vegetables, meats and fish. From raspberries to brassicas to roots, from venison to lamb to beef, from langoustine to crab to lobster, Fife proffers the perfect painter’s palate for the culinary skills and creativity of the kingdom’s chefs.

One of Joanne and my favorite restaurants is The Dory Bistro and Gallery in Pittenweem. The Dory is nestled down at the harbour.  As Joanne did say when we ate there recently:

the fish that is on my plate tastes so fresh. I know it just came into the fish market this morning. As we eat here, you can see the fishermen sorting fish through those big open doors across the road.

The restaurant prepare fish exquisitely. Although the beautifully textured halibut is a particular favourite of ours, the Cullen Skink (a smoked haddock, potato and onion soup) and the Isle of Cumbrae oysters with an accompanying shallot mignonette, are very special. For dessert personally I cannot see past the Seville Marmalade Pudding, Crème Anglaise wtih Pink Grapefruit Sorbet. For vegetarians there are delightful dishes such as Miso-glazed Aubergine, Satay Sauce, Carrot Slaw, Roast Peanuts, Ginger & Orange Pearls, and to follow: Exotic Mushrooms, Tagliatelle with Crispy Cavolo Nero.
