Anne Hathaway’s Cottage

Anne Hathaway, wife of William Shakespeare, was the daughter of a yeoman (a land-owning commoner, someone of the ‘middling class’). The ‘cottage’ in Shottery by Stratford-upon-Avon was known as Hewlands Farm in Shakespeare’s Day, and the Hathaway’s farmed more than 90 acres which was not an insubstantial land holding. Now its name is Anne Hathaway’s Cottage and it has peaceful cottage gardens, an orchard and a sculpture trail.
